Girls on Ice Canada Clothing Drive

Because Girls on Ice Canada is aimed at underprivileged young women who have never been on glaciers and who aren’t kitted out for mountain travel, we’re collecting gently-used gear for them.

If you’re looking to clear out some of your old gear to make room for new this summer, please consider a donation to Girls on Ice. The drop off is at Gear Up Sports in Canmore on June 6, 2:00 - 5:30pm.

Wolverine Watch – A project supported by the ACC Environment fund

Wolverines have been around in the Rocky Mountains since the ice age, but unfortunately their population has been considerably reduced over the last 50 years due to our changing climate and landscapes.

Our furry friends are now considered to be a species of Special Concern under the Canadian Species at Risk Act, so initiatives like Wolverine Watch have launched efforts to help understand wolverines and preserve the lives of one of our oldest living creatures.

Your Voice on Hut Etiquette: PART 2

This is PART II of the hut etiquette series, featuring five points that we thought new hut users would benefit from, and a few “for fun” stories that were included in the feedback.

While we do have our own set of rules that are sent out during hut reservations, put on the walls and in literature, we’re sure there are a few informal ones that can only be learned through enough hut trips.

While we do have our own set of rules that are sent out during hut reservations, put on the walls and in literature, we’re sure there are a few informal ones that can only be learned through enough hut trips.

Jim Haberl Outhouse Update: A project supported by the ACC Environment Fund

This past summer the ACC Vancouver Section upgraded and moved the outhouse at the Jim Haberl Hut and attached it to the main building to increase safety and help the local alpine environment. Increased outhouse inconvenience in the winter discourages proper waste disposal, and the ACC’s Environment Fund granted funds to help rectify the situation.

Learning from the best: A trip supported by the Karl Nagy Memorial Scholarship

In 2001 the Karl Nagy Memorial Scholarship was established to help aspirant guides and volunteer leaders develop their skills. This past summer Bree Kullman was awarded with the scholarship, seeing her off to Hallam Glacier for the 2018 GMC. There she watched, learned and led with the camp’s guides - navigating through complicated terrain, maintaining efficiency and a genuine rapport with the ropemates.
